Syracuse sends 8 athletes to NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Eight members of the Syracuse track and field team qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend at the NCAA East Preliminaries in Jacksonville, Florida, the largest such group in over 30 years.

On Thursday, Margo Malone raced to a time of 33:49.45 in the women’s 10,000-meter run, snagging one of the final 24 spots in June’s championship race.

In the men’s 10,000-meter run, Martin Hehir, Max Straneva and Dan Lennon all punched tickets to the championships. Hehir ran to a third-place finish time of 29:53.89 while Straneva (30:08.10) took ninth and Lennon (30:09.95) snagged 12th.

On Saturday, Freddie Crittenden finished the 110-meter hurdles in 13.86 seconds. He advanced to the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year.

In the same event, Donald Pollitt punched his ticket after missing out last year by a mere two thousandths of a second. Pollitt clocked in at 13.72, the fourth-best time in the region.



Justyn Knight (13.53.48) also advanced, placing second in his heat in the 5,000-meter run while Colin Bennie gathered the eighth overall qualifying spot with a time of 13:58.68.

The NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships will begin on June 10, with the top performers from the East and West regions meeting in Eugene, Oregon.
