NCAA to relocate championships from North Carolina in 2016-17 because of House Bill 2

The NCAA is relocating its championship events from North Carolina in 2016-17 because of a controversial bill in the state.

The NCAA will relocate seven championship events from North Carolina in 2016-17 because of House Bill 2, which has been referred to as HB2.

The goal of HB2 was to create consistency across the state regarding nondiscrimination laws governing wages, employment and public accommodations. The law overrides local law and prevents municipalities from creating laws relevant to those three areas. Most notably, the law forces everyone to use the bathroom of the sex listed on their birth certificate and prevents transgender people from using the bathrooms of their associated gender.

“Current North Carolina state laws make it challenging to guarantee that host communities can help deliver on that commitment if NCAA events remained in the state,” the NCAA Board of Governors said per the NCAA’s release.

Below is a list of all events that will be moved:

  • 2016 Division I women’s soccer championship
  • 2016 Division III men’s and women’s soccer championships
  • 2017 DI men’s basketball championship first and second rounds
  • 2017 DI women’s golf championship regional
  • 2017 DIII men’s and women’s tennis championships
  • 2017 DI women’s lacrosse championships
  • 2017 DII baseball championships
