Here are some important updates you might’ve missed while you’ve been away from Syracuse University:

SU’s summer construction plans are underway

From bathroom renovations to classroom upgrades, summer construction on campus has started. These changes will take place in Day Hall and in the shorter wing of DellPlain Hall as well as the first and second floor of Haven Hall. Campus beautification is also a priority this summer, and SU will be adding more greenery to the campus landscape. While some projects will extend into the fall semester, these improvements will have larger implications on campus and locally.

Uber will begin operating in Syracuse by June 29

New York state Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill allowing ride-hailing services to operate in upstate New York, including in Syracuse, starting June 29. Prompted by the approval, Uber announced it will push  up the expected arrival of Uber in Syracuse to that day, enabling SU students to use Uber in Syracuse and elsewhere in upstate New York. Anyone interested in becoming a driver themselves must be at least 19 years old with a valid driver’s license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles and must pass a criminal background check.

Chipotle restaurants on Marshall Street and Erie Boulevard involved in credit card hack

The Chipotle locations on Marshall Street and Erie Boulevard East in Syracuse were among the hundreds of locations affected by a nationwide credit card hack. Malware on the restaurants’ registers allowed hackers to search the names of cardholders, card numbers, expiration dates and internal verification codes. The company stated they will continue to work on improving security measures and that customers should review their credit card statements if they believe they were affected by the credit card hack.

Andrew Maxwell dropped out of Syracuse mayoral race

Andrew Maxwell dropped out of the Syracuse mayoral race, stating that competition and a lack of party support drove his decision. “I ran this race to win, and unfortunately, without the support of the Party and with a crowded field, I believe my path to victory has essentially closed,” Maxwell said in a press release. Maxwell is the first Democratic candidate to drop out of the race, leaving six Democrats, one Republican, one Green Party and one independent candidate still in the running.
